Reports: The PGA Championship will move to May

The PGA Championship kicks off this week at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC. According to reports, next year could be the last time the tournament is played in August.

Golf insiders are reporting that the PGA will make an announcement this week that they will move the PGA Championship to May starting in 2019.

Golf Talk Canada’s Bob Weeks reported the move was imminent this morning via Twitter.

Ron Green Jr. from the Global Golf Post also wrote in detail about the inevitability of the move to May.

One of the main reasons for the switch is that the PGA would like to finish their season by Labour Day weekend. The tour championship would ideally be held on the September long weekend.

When you think about how congested the TV landscape becomes in September the move makes sense on many different levels. September marks the start of the NFL and NCAA football seasons as well as the U.S Open tennis grand slam.

The move to May would likely mean a boost in TV ratings which in turn means more sponsorship money is there for the taking.

We will keep you up to date as soon as any announcement becomes official.
